Since 2015, when we began our earnest exploration of the Napa Valley’s great terroir, we have “interviewed” many stunning vineyards across several appellations here. Our rule of thumb has been to make a wine for three vintages in order to get a base understanding of a vineyard’s quality across vintage variation. As you can imagine, each vineyard starts to tell you what it wants to be! One afternoon while tasting through incredible wines from these single vineyards as barrel samples, we recognized a handful truly deserved to stand on their own as well as be priced fairly for their quality level, some of which will be priced less than our ROAM wines. This ethos is of course in line with the Grand Cru and MGA framework mentality of the great Burgundian and Barolo houses in Europe. And while we are crafting mostly Cabernet Sauvignon based Napa Valley wines, this commitment to tiered-quality single vineyard bottlings is something that has always attracted us to our favorite old world wines. Also, on a regular basis we have spoken to so many of you on our mailing list about how Napa has jettisoned so far up in price, that many large houses have sold increasingly expensive blends that aren’t even vineyard or appellation designated. We agree. That is why we decided to create a whole new sister brand to ROAM, confidently under our family name SCULATTI. These embossed labels show the deep rooted tree crest from our ancestral village in Italy, and the front label reads very straight forward as to what exact vineyard, appellation and wine is in each bottle. Some day, as decades and centuries of terroir expression continue in Napa Valley, we hope that our wines can help define a broader discussion of America’s single vineyards that are priced fairly to each level of a vineyard’s quality. While our original brand ROAM will continue onward and grow, so too now will our offerings from the SCULATTI house grow.
